    I can't believe that I am actually here at The Lebanon Enterprise and serving the community. It has been too long since I have started pursuing the education needed for this career path at Lindsey Wilson College and to be honest, I was not sure I would make it this far.

    If you love "quick wit," then you should have seen "Hello Dolly," by the youth actors of the Central Kentucky Community Theatre at the Opera House in Springfield.

    Determination

    De•ter•mi•na•tion (n): firm or fixed intention to achieve a desired end.

     

    The Merriam-Webster Dictionary's definition of "determination" is not a very good one, in my opinion.

    I'd like to write my own definition(s), if I may.

    Determination: A natural instinct to push oneself further, even if it's painful.

    A reason to wink back

    It's been a few weeks since the most recent drug court graduation was held in the 11th Circuit, which includes Marion County, but for those who completed the program, it was a significant event.

    It was both a recognition and a reminder that they can and have been living their lives drug and alcohol free.

    Bobby Burke Sr. of Lebanon is one of those graduates.

    Yard sale leftovers? Donate to The Caring Place

    The staff at The Caring Place hopes that everyone enjoys their yard sale adventures this weekend.

    The Caring Place has a full house at this time and several of our families are getting ready to move into their own homes. Please keep in mind that they have left their homes with very few personal items and no furniture.

    How low can we go?

    National media commentators have made a big deal about President Barack Obama's relatively poor showing in the May 22 Kentucky Primary. Considering that he didn't have any opposition, it probably does mean something that more than 42 percent of the Democrats who did vote cast their ballots for uncommitted.

    On the Republican side former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney received 66.8 percent of his party's votes.

    For all of the steps forward the Marion County School System has taken in the last year, it appears that they have taken a giant step backwards this spring.

    From the meeting notes of the Marion County High School Site Base Council, it appears that Marion County High School has once again hired Anthony Epps as an assistant coach for both the football and girls basketball teams.

    Balanced Senate postal reform bill...

    Now that the U.S. Senate has passed bipartisan S 1789 to reform the ailing U.S. Postal Service, critics are trying to disable the bill on its way to the House. Both postal unions and USPS want more for their side, and some Republicans mistakenly believe the bill burdens taxpayers.
    Unfortunately, Kentucky Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul both bought into that logic and opposed 1789.

    Taking one for the team

    Lessons in equality are still being learned.

    You may have seen a national news item about Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, which recently decided to forfeit the Arizona Charter Athletic Association state baseball championship game against Mesa Preparatory Academy.

    Had Our Lady of Sorrows suspended players for misbehavior? Did the school discover some kind of cheating scandal?

    It's time to celebrate being a...

    If you saw a crowd of people running on treadmills on Main Street in Lebanon Friday, along with a life-size bulldog doing the humpty dance, don't freak out. You weren't seeing things.

    Friday, The Lebanon Enterprise hosted its first annual Main Street Treadmill Challenge.

    The event's goal was two-fold:

    One, to raise money for Girls on the Run;

    And, two, to promote health and wellness in our community.

    The final paragraph of the story in the May 16 Enterprise about the Kentucky State Police being found not negligent in the death of LeBron Gaither should have read as follows:

    The Board of Claims noted in its findings that Detective Tim Simpson testified that the KSP has the highest degree of responsibility to a confidential informant, and Detective Danny Burton testified that he believed he was responsible for Gaither's death.

  • Girls rule

    Girls in Marion County are lucky to have such good support from organizations like Girls on the Run, 4-H, and Girls Scouts. We need to give a big pat on the back to the adult volunteers and parents that help make these programs available to our girls. With these programs, girls learn to believe in themselves and to grow up to be strong and accomplished women.

    Memorial Day - a day to be grateful...

    With most schools already out for the year and the sun not setting until well into the evening, it's understandable if many look to the upcoming three-day holiday weekend as the unofficial start of summer.

    Memorial Day is about much more than that, though.

    For nearly 150 years now, it has been a day of remembrance, a day to recall the sacrifice that so many gave for our nation.

  • Rich should 'step up'

    "One man with courage is a majority." - Thomas Jefferson

    The spirit of Carnegie needs to be reborn in the multi-, multi-millionaire, billionaire class.

    They have the excess funds to build bridges, dams, roadways, libraries, universities and vocational schools.

    The middle class and families need not, should not, be burdened with these issues.

    The super rich elites need to step up and do what is good for all and the future.

    Old phone is smart enough to make...

    The first time I saw one of those strange little QR codes in an advertisement, I thought it was a mistake. It looked like a graphic artist had mangled a photo or barcode.

    Quick Response codes have been around since the mid-1990s but their popularity has increased since the introduction of "smartphones."

    They've even been showing up in ads in The LaRue County Herald News.

    I'm a fan of the comic strip The Boondocks, and last week, I couldn't help but be reminded of a strip I read years ago.

    Granddad was talking to his grandsons. He thought they might have some questions in light of news reports about "gay marriage," and he wanted them to know how he felt.

    "First off," he tells the boys, "all marriage is wrong."
