  • Letter: Food program or...

    The government child feeding program could be helpful if an earthquake or other disruptive situation happens.

    But isn't it the responsibility of parents to feed their children?

    If a family needs food stamps, are they not available to fill a need? Where does the family responsibility rest?

    It seems to be a conditioning feeding system to control or encourage more young people to rely on the government for their daily bread.

    Tips for future college students

    It's the typical pattern: students graduate from high school, and parents and relatives will immediately give them advice about how to navigate the world of college. Which is great, except some of those who give advice have been out of college for years, maybe even decades. So, as a current college student, I thought I'd write a column with some up-to-date advice based on my two-year experience.

    The Fifth Amendment says many things, but in the middle it says, “... nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb.” That means you can’t be put on trial twice for the same offense.
    Now in Communist China and dictator Syria, their courts put people on trial over and over until they get the verdict they want. It’s called jury shopping!
    Why does the Kentucky court system do the same thing? I guess there is a dictator and Communist connection.

    As a founding member and current president of the Marion County Humane Society, I would like to commend and congratulate the staff and volunteers at the Marion County Animal Shelter for their excellent efforts on behalf of animals (and people) these past few years. My good friend, the late Georgia Duley (the original president), would be so proud and happy if she could see what the shelter has evolved into.

    I wonder if Marion County has any idea what a fine library they have, sitting right there on Main Street in Lebanon. I hadn’t been in it in years, and as I wandered around looking before the book-signing on Saturday, I marveled at what an excellent facility it had become over the years I’ve been away. I hope Marion Countians are justly proud of it.

    We would like to extend our appreciation on behalf of the 2001 Senior Class of Marion County High School and their parents for the gratuity extended by all who donated time, money and talents to Project Graduation. Putting this project together was a work of joy but the credit belongs to you because of your astounding generosity and support. Our seniors leave Marion County High School knowing they belong to a charitable community. We are grateful to the community for continuing this tradition.

    I have been an avid reader of Parents Magazine since before I had my son, and there is one story I read that I have never been able to forget.
    It was a horrific story about a Virginia couple that had a picture perfect life: A comfortable house, well-paying jobs and two little boys they adopted as babies from Guatemala.

    Most people have heard the phrase: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” This phrase has been attributed to Albert Einstein for a great number of years.
    When I think of that phrase, and watch what is happening in our school system, especially MCHS and the Board of Education, I find myself wondering if that is what we are doing now.

    Memorial Day means different things to different people.
    For some, it’s a day off from work.
    For others, it’s the first official day of summer break.
    And, for many of us, it’s just another day at work.
    Far too few of us actually observe the day the way it was meant to be observed, which is to honor and remember all of the people who have died serving our country.

    Executive's decision

    Jack Brammer of The Lexington Herald-Leader’s Bluegrass Politics blog reported last Friday that Gov. Steve Beshear has released the names of Republicans who are his “supporters.” The list of 70 GOP members who are endorsing Beshear’s re-election bid appears at the end of the entry.

    Good to Grow

    The Heart of Kentucky Bourbon and BBQ Musicfest is good for Lebanon.

    And it has the potential to become something great.

    We know there currently are a variety of side issues related to tourism, the event and the event organizer, but let’s set those aside for a moment.

    Here are some of the positives we saw:

     A photo in the May 11 Enterprise from the Lebanon Elementary School Derby parade should have identified one of the students as Maggie Overstreet.

    With children being arrested for toy guns, I think parents should take a serious look at their educational and authority structure and its training.

    Apparently, the democratic habit of questioning authority or conventional wisdom could place your or your children in  conflict with “The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders”, fifth edition (DSM-V) to be published in 2013.

    Driven to succeed

    Peggy Downs is a special person.

    I learned that quickly as a teenager boarding school bus No. 173 every morning and afternoon. Every single day as I got on the school bus, Peggy always greeted me with a warm smile.

    However, one particular summer morning sticks out in my mind.

    Living with loss

    The trial of Adrian Benton began Monday. Benton is one of two men facing charges as a result of the death of John G. Mattingly III, a Marion County native and University of Kentucky student.

    The other defendant in the case, Raymond Wright, pled guilty while jury selection was taking place. He admitted that he pulled the trigger, and for that, he will likely receive life in prison.
