  • Letter: We need more about our post...
  • Stress can make you sick

    "Are you safe? Are you sound? Are you whole? Are you well?"

    I was reminded of that memorable quote from Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who last week as I laid lifeless in bed for two days. I, like many of you, had become a victim of a vicious 48-hour virus (that actually lasted 72 hours).

    It was a very strange occurrence because, you see, I don't get sick.

    Or, so I thought.

    People have asked - and for good reason - why the superintendent's residency matters. It doesn't affect what goes on in the classrooms in Marion County. It doesn't affect test scores. So, why is it an issue?

    It may seem trivial on first look, but it matters for reasons we have yet to hear anyone explain. The next superintendent's contract will have a residency clause, as it should. The question that has been asked, but not answered (at least not publicly), is why is this in the contract at all?

    Although it is too soon to say what exactly will become law when the 2011 legislative session concludes next month, several major initiatives that the Kentucky House of Representatives would like to see on that list moved further down the road this past week.

    That includes one of the chamber's - and Gov. Beshear's - top priorities this year: Keeping Medicaid from facing a catastrophic deficit in the months ahead.

    Kudos to you for the column on “Don’t be a litterbug, get your pets fixed” by Weny Doric. Kudos again for the letter submitted from the St. Francis community about dogs (pets in general) being shot. I believe there can never be enough articles written and published about abandoned and abused animals.

    As we returned to Frankfort to resume the 2011 Regular Session of the Kentucky General Assembly, we are faced with issues that are as wide and varied as the monster snowstorm that cut through much of the United States this week. Several bills have already passed through the House of Representatives and are on their way to the Senate for consideration.

    The General Assembly returned to Frankfort this week after the January recess to continue our 30-day session. Protecting the lives of the unborn and saving tax-payer dollars were two themes that emerged.

  • Letter: No regrets about motives

    I usually do not respond to editorials. I consider it an exercise of futility,  after all the editor has the final word, however the last week editorial was of such a personal nature, I deemed it necessary.

    I suppose my decision concerning the superintendent could be viewed as a “flip flop” but, if so, it was a good “flip flop” based on facts and public sentiment.

  • Letter: Let our dogs run

    Our pets have run free in St. Francis for more than 100 years. Not once has a neighbor spoke or written a complaint against a dog crossing their yard. I am very grateful for the dogs in the neighborhood. If it wasn’t for the neighborhood pets we would be overcome with rats, possums, raccoons, rattle snakes, copper heads and coyotes. Most of which can carry rabies.

    To the idiots who didn’t stop to see if I was hurt or dead after I hit a tree at WMES around 6:30 Saturday morning, were you in a hurry to get to work? If it was too cold for you, what about me? It was one degree, and the wind made it feel colder.

    Flip Flop

    People don't usually discuss flip-flops in the dead of winter, but it seems to fit some recent actions and statements by a couple members of the Marion County Board of Education.

    Just six months ago, DeLane Pinkston and Bernard Miles were singing the praises of Superintendent Donald Smith. Since the November elections - when three of Pinkston and Miles' colleagues were voted out of office - it seems they have had a change of heart.

  • Letter: Smith deserved better

    I want to commend Tiffany Adams on her article in last week's Enterprise. It hit a nerve in me that I haven't had in many years. It's the hot topic in the African American community. If I may quote you, you said that it's 2011, not 1911. Some people in this community are still stuck in time. You also talked about how some teachers acted out their prejudices when you were a student in school.

    I am embarrassed to be a Marion County citizen after watching the recent school board meeting that dealt with Mr. Smith's evaluation. Only Mr. Mullins seemed respectful of dealing with facts and focusing on Mr. Smith's work performance. This meeting appeared to be held with a planned agenda. This meeting seemed directed to run him out of town. Congratulations - this is exactly what was accomplished.
