  • Skate park?

Two weeks ago, I wrote a story on some local skateboarders, Michael Truitt and his son, Jackson.

I wanted to do the story for several reasons, the biggest one being that I think skateboarding is cool. Probably the second biggest reason is because I had a chance to feature a unique sport.

  • Disc golf

I’m not an athlete. Never have been, never will be.
In middle school, I lagged behind in all of our runs. In high school, it was the same way. I’ve never played basketball or football in any sort of competitive form. I’ve never played tennis or rode a bike in any competitive form.
Because of this, it’s hard for me to say that I love playing a particular sport.
It does not mean, however, that I haven’t enjoyed some athletic activities. Some of these include: paintball, bike riding and disc golf.

  • ‘Group of Death’ awaits US soccer

The most popular sport in the world will kick off its most popular event on Thursday, June 12.

Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup. ESPN and its affiliates will air every single game – 64 of them in just over one month of action.

  • A little goes a long way

With Marion County High School’s sports programs in hibernation at the moment, I am left dipping my thoughts and hands into the hidden world of athletic activities in Marion County. While I do like putting a focus on some of the lesser known activities, it means I have to work just a little bit harder. I have to approach these activities from a completely different angle than I did at the high school.

It also means the beat of the rhythm I have been dancing to has changed.

  • Thank you!

Last week marked the end of Marion County High School sports for the academic year. Both the baseball and softball teams were eliminated in the district tournament and the track team competed in the state tournament, which was held at the University of Kentucky.

Like many of the coaches, I watched some athletes improve their capabilities; though not as long as the coaches have (we’re talking months versus years, folks).

  • It’s just a game, man

“This will not stand, you know, this aggression will not stand, man.”

That’s a quote from one of my favorite movies, “The Big Lebowski.”

In it, he was quoting a speech given by former president George H.W. Bush.

I bring up the quote because last week, Stephen Lega brought to my attention a story run on Whitley County’s The News Journal website.

  • Paying dues

It has been a busy week in the sports world, not only here in Marion County, or in Kentucky, but also abroad.

Here at home, the Lady Knights have been kicking butt and taking names, while the Knights have had a rough week and took only one win.

Of course, on May 3 the Kentucky Derby was held at Churchill Downs, as it has for 140 years. In case you don’t know which horse won, it was California Chrome.

  • Think pink

Pink, what a controversial color. I remember that as a boy, pink was considered unmanly. In fact, by some’s standards, it was downright girly. If you were a boy and wore pink, you were subject to some serious ridicule and possibly physical assault by your male counterparts.

Yeah, back then wearing pink was just not allowed if you were a boy.

Times have changed a bit though. Many men wear pink, and that’s OK!

  • Not so lucky

     Superstition.

It’s a word that with a definition that some might call degrading.

Merriam-Webster.com defines superstition as: “a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation.”

    Wow.
