  • A look back

Now that the regular seasons are complete for the Marion County High School Knights and Lady Knights, I thought it would be a good time to look back at how they did throughout the year.
The Knights started the season off on the right foot, winning their first four games. Two of those four wins came on the road at Nelson County and Washington County. The next game for the Knights took them to Madison Central to take on the currently seventh ranked team in the state. The Knights fell in that contest by 34 points, but had some stiff competition.

  • Senior night

I have been involved in several senior night celebrations, both as a basketball and softball player and as a softball coach. Each time, it was an emotional time that I still remember to this day.

  • Playoff push is on

Well, the Lady Knights capped off another undefeated district run this year.  Not surprising, since they haven't lost a district game in 1,843 days counting today. The last loss was to Adair County at home on Jan. 23, 2007 in a 64-59 overtime loss. This also happens to be the only district loss under Head Coach Trent Milby.
Ok, enough about the Lady Knights and their unprecedented run. Let's talk about the Knights and their success over the past couple of seasons.

  • Third time is a charm?

Going into the girls Louisville Invitational Tournament (L.I.T.), I didn't know exactly what to expect this year. Last year at this time, Josh and I traveled to Bellarmine University to watch the 2011 L.I.T., where the Marion County Lady Knights lost to Mercy Academy in a one point heartbreaker in their first action of the tournament on a Friday afternoon.

  • Teams on top

Recently, the Lady Knights defeated the DuPont Manual Lady Crimsons in the Roby Dome in a battle of the top two girls basketball teams in the state. The only problem was, at the time, the Lady Knights were ranked behind the Lady Crimsons in the state rankings. However, with the win over Manual, Marion County leaped past the Lady Crimsons into the top spot of the state girls basketball rankings.

  • NFL playoffs

This year, watching the NFL playoffs is different for me. Usually, I am cheering on my favorite NFL team, the Indianapolis Colts, to win each playoff game and make it to the Super Bowl. But, due to a 2-14 record after their star quarterback Peyton Manning didn't play a snap this season, the Colts didn't make it to the playoffs, which hasn't happened in several seasons.

  • Top 20 match up

There is a game coming up at Marion County High School in just a mere three days that I have been waiting for all season. Of course you know by now that I am talking about the scheduled match-up between the Lady Knights and the Lady Crimsons of DuPont Manual.

  • A strong finish

Well, we rang in the New Year Sunday, and it's now 2012, which I have a hard time writing. It always takes me a little while to get used to the fact.

But the point of my column this week is not to talk about sports in the new year, well not yet anyway. What I want to discuss is the strong finish to the old year of 2011 that both the basketball teams and an individual athlete had last week.
