Columns

  • Cold Start

Well, I asked my 3-year-old daughter, Karli, for ideas for my column just to see what she would say, and she said that I should write about commercials. I didn’t feel that this was a good idea, so I chose otherwise.

  • Dream Come True

You ever have one of those dreams that you want so bad to come true that you can feel it? What about a dream that you had to wait four years to come true? Well, the Lady Knights have been waiting four long years for their dream to come true.
Basketball fans in Marion County have been waiting for 20 years for their dreams to come true for another state basketball championship. In fact, today is the exact 20th anniversary of the Marion County Knights win at Rupp Arena over Dunbar to bring home the first state title in school history.

  • Spring fever
  • Big time awards

As we get closer to the end of basketball season, several awards are preparing to be handed out. Most of these awards that are coming up now, are not your everyday, run-of-the-mill awards. These are big time awards that cover the entire state or in one particular case, the entire country.

  • Super TV ad

First of all, I must make a confession. I only caught bits and pieces of the Super Bowl recently. I did not sit and watch the entire game. That may be a bit of a surprise to some of you, but I was busy working on the next edition of the paper during that time slot. Because of that, I missed nearly all of the Super Bowl commercials.

  • Into the postseason

Well, as I am writing this, one of the winter sports, swimming, has already headed into postseason and actually completed postseason play. The Aquaknights swim team competed in the 3rd Region swim meet last weekend in Jamestown, where a pair of swimmers, Laura Rice and Lindsey Buckman, once again broke their own school records.

  • Will it happen?

As I have said before, nothing is ever set in stone. Nothing is truly a 100 percent guarantee. So, after saying that, I find myself sitting here typing a column wanting to say those words, but I know that I have to control myself.

  • Leading the way

It’s always with much anticipation for me when the Kentucky High School Athletic Association releases the first basketball stats for the current season. Recently, that finally happened.
As you may have guessed, with a 19-0 girls basketball team, we should find some entries for Marion County in or near the top of the respective categories. And that is exactly what we have.

  • The other side of sports

As a fan of sports, I find myself scouring the Internet looking at reports and stories about sports I am not familiar with. While doing this lately, I ran across a story that caught my attention. I am almost embarrassed to admit that I was unaware of this, but I was until I did a little investigating.

  • Change of plans

So, I had my column planned all week long. Josh and I thought it would be fun on Friday night, since there were no basketball games, to take Karli bowling for the first time. My friend from Georgetown had come down to the house to babysit Karli on Friday since her regular sitter was on a trip. She agreed that a bowling trip would be exciting. I love to bowl, so I was looking forward to it and I wanted to see how 3-year-old Karli would feel about the bowling alley.
