  • Epps lasts until final cut


    Sophomore standout Makayla Epps was invited to attend the tryout for the under 16 USA national women’s basketball team recently. Those tryouts were held in Colorado Springs, Colo., during the last week of May, and Epps made it through until the final cut.  
    Originally, 120 prospective team members were attempting to make the team. As each day progressed, a portion of those players were cut. Epps’ performance allowed her to remain in the hunt until the final cut in which there were 35 remaining players hoping for a spot on the team.

  • Epps, Goodin-Rogers commit to U of L


    Makayla Epps and Kyvin Goodin-Rogers, both Marion County Lady Knights sophomore standout basketball players, verbally committed to the University of Louisville last week. University of Louisville Head Coach Jeff Walz has been recruiting both Epps and Goodin-Rogers heavily for quite a while, and finally has landed the two stars. Both players are considered to be two of the top recruits in the 2013 national class, and have each made the Courier-Journal’s all state team twice, while having played high school basketball for four years.

  • Lady Knights honored


    The Marion County Lady Knights softball team held its annual banquet Sunday and several players earned awards for their performances throughout the 2011 season.
    A large group of seniors each earned an award for their contributions to the program over the past four years. Casey Jo Walls, Evan Thompson, Ann Morgan Reynolds, Allison Mattingly, Allye Hamilton, and Tiffany Sapp all took home the senior awards. Walls also nabbed the most improved award, Hamilton collected the most strikeouts from the mound, and Sapp drew the most walks and smashed the most home runs.

  • Burdette/Swencki fall in second round at state

    Thursday, the Marion County Knights tennis doubles team of sophomore Jacob Burdette and junior Noah Swencki traveled to Sayre High School in Lexington to compete in the state tennis tournament. Burdette and Swencki won the regional competition last week. The dynamic duo were able to make it through one round of the state level, but fell in the second round of action.
    In the first round, Burdette and Swencki played Chad Higgins and Cole McCreary of Lawrence County. They were able to defeat this team in two sets (6-2) and (6-2).

  • Divine places in hurdles

    Marion County High School track team members who qualified for state competition competed on the campus of the University of Louisville Thursday. Natavia Young was the only member of the team to place in the medals throughout the event. To earn a medal in the meet, a participant must place in the top eight spots. Young jumped 15’ 4.5” in the long jump event, which garnered her eighth place. Young also jumped 34’ in the triple jump, which was good for fourth place.

  • Knights’ season comes to a close


    The  Marion County Knights baseball team traveled to Adair County Wednesday night to play Campbellsville in the 20th District tournament. The Knights couldn’t get their offense going, only scoring two runs and giving up six runs to Campbellsville. The loss would take away the opportunity to make a regional tournament appearance, and put Marion County’s overall record for the 2011 season at 11-14. Marion County’s Devin Spalding and Dylan Spalding were named to the 20th District All-Tournament Team.

  • 20th District Tournament begins

    The Marion County Lady Knights softball team began the postseason Monday night against Taylor County at Talley Field.  With the threat of rain looming, the game progressed into the seventh inning before being postponed due to lightning.  The Lady Knights were trailing 12-7 in the top of the seventh inning with one out and Taylor County batting. The game was set to resume last night with the championship game of the 20th district softball tournament to follow. Results were unknown as of press time.

  • Several qualify for state tourney

    Thursday evening, the Marion County track teams competed in the regional meet in Elizabethtown. Six individuals and two relay teams qualified for competition at the state level. The state track meet will be held tomorrow at the University of Louisville.
    Two days before the regional meet, sophomore standout Brooks Divine was medically cleared to return to the team.
