  • Woods and Waters: Duck and goose seasons have begun

It all started Thursday! Well, duck and goose started Thursday and while duck season went till Nov. 27, goose goes without interruption until Feb. 15, 2017.
Duck season opens back up on Dec. 5 and goes through Jan. 27, 2017.
John and I saw one decoy spread while we fished on Friday.
We thought the Black Friday tournament started at 8 a.m., but it actually launched at 7 a.m. Another angler, who’d fished several Black Friday tournaments, said all the others started at 8 a.m. We fished until noon anyway! Oh yeah, and we caught fish!

  • Woods and Waters: Spend Black Friday fishing, not shopping

Here come the holidays - and most hunting seasons are open. Between the available hunting and fishing it’s sorta hard sometimes to make up your mind on what to do!
Being retired, I have more time to enjoy my outdoor addictions. Those who have jobs know all about the overload. By the time most work schedules are over it’s too close to dark to hunt anything. Same for fishing. You’re forced to cram in as much as possible on weekends and holidays. Of course, with a family, even those days are limited.

  • Woods and Waters: Local hunters have success on opening day

My definition of ironic: Spending hours, days, weeks scouting the woods for deer while a giant deer gets hit by a truck right by Wal-Mart!
Last Monday, a reported nine-pointer was hit and killed a couple hundred yards from the stoplight at Wal-Mart. It hurts, it really hurts!

  • Woods and Waters: Make sure you’re completely prepared for big gun season

Saturday, Nov. 12 … this coming Saturday!
So, what’s so special about Saturday? Come on, ya been living under a rock? No, it’s not related to the “Thank God it’s over” election.
It’s the opening day of our modern firearms i.e. big gun season! You’ve waited 11 long months for this day. You’ve scouted, put out bait, and some of you planted food plots!
You’ve practiced your shooting skills and cleaned, then re-cleaned, your guns. Now, it’s time.

  • Woods and Waters: Fishing isn’t over and gun season is about to begin

As our fishing season ended for 2016, I reflected back on a few things. Specifically, unanswered questions. Ya see, while the rest of our crew was busy actually catching fish, John and I concentrated on the important matters in life. We managed to answer the most pressing problems but still - after months of contemplation - we are still stuck on one question: In the USA we steer cars from the left side, but we steer boats from the right (starboard) side. Our question is “Why?” If you have the answer let one of us know, it’s important!

  • Woods and Waters: Be ready for deer season Nov 12-27

I know this is a week early, but you might need the extra time to change your plans. As you know, Oct. 31 is Halloween. And, it’s customary to dress up. Now you can dress up as a pirate, or cowboy, or maybe even an action figure. But, no matter how strong the urge, don’t dress up as a clown! This year, clowns aren’t one of the “in” things to be dressed as. Besides, you could be harmed.

  • Woods and Waters: Number of young hunters decreasing for variety of reasons

One question asked by fish and wildlife agencies is, “Why is the number of young hunters decreasing?”
That seems to require a very involved answer. No place to hunt, no transportation, no mentor type to take them and, according to some kids, it’s boring - just to name a few reasons.
I can understand most of them. Unless you own land, are related to someone who’ll let you hunt or have landowning friends who’ll let you hunt, you’re pretty much out of luck.

  • WOODS AND WATERS: Nothin’ goin’ on but Ham Days stuff week

There I stood, anticipating the 2016 season. I’d gotten some new stuff over the summer and was thinking, “Maybe this would be the season.”
So there I was, patiently waiting … who am I kidding … I was anxious! You don’t practice all summer gettin’ ready’ and not be excited when the time comes! Course ‘I’ don’t practice very much!

  • WOODS AND WATERS: Jason Spalding wins the Ham Days ‘Big Pig’ award

Our Mid-KY Bass Anglers Annual Ham Days Invitational Bass Tournament was held Sunday. While the fishing wasn’t great - or even good - at least the weather held up. Course my luck went as usual!

  • Woods and Waters: Ham Days Open Bass Tournament is Sunday

Coming up on Sunday, Sept. 18, is the Mid-KY Bass Anglers annual Ham Days Open Bass Tournament. This tournament will launch at 8 a.m. … yea, 8 a.m. … with a 2 p.m. weigh-in.
