    Last week my friend Jerry Stine passed away after a hard-fought battle. But, if you want details, look elsewhere! I prefer to remember some of the good times and stories I heard... Well, not all the stories!
    Jerry a.k.a. Scoutmaster, "Stinky" and Sir, was a good-time kind of guy. Jokes, pranks, parties and the outdoors all defined my friend.

  • 2012 Bike and Hike

    The fifth annual Bike and Hike was held April 28 at Graham Memorial Park. Hundreds of people participated in the 5K run/walk and the 10K bike ride.
    The event was organized by the Marion Count Health Department, Marion County Community Education and the Marion County Extension Office.

  • Turkeys can be hard to get

    Found everything. Got the coffee fixed and the thermos full. Some snacks in the pack and camo’d up. And, it was only 5:30 a.m.
    A short drive to a friend’s farm, the blind set up and still dead silent in the dark, and it was 6 a.m.
    Then it happened. A gobble! Birds flying down and more gobbles, it’s 7 a.m. After a few calls it sounds like the bird(s) are heading my way. A movement, a red head, my bird on the way!

    The Warrior Dash is coming to Marion County.
    "We describe it as the craziest frickin' day of your life. It's a 5K run from hell, as we call it," said Alex Yount, the media relations director for Red Frog Events, which puts on the obstacle racing series.

  • Outdoor options abound in Marion County

    A while back I told you about a couple of stat, KDFWR, projects in Marion County. This would be the boat ramp currently going in at the St. Joe Bridge and the “rumored” ramp at the bridge on Highway 55, Campbellsville Highway.
    These projects, when completed, will “open up” a large section of the Rolling Fork River. Then, our secret will be out: We have some of the best river fishing KY has to offer!

  • Wild turkey season opener and farm, home and garden show fun

    The 2012 wild turkey season opened this past weekend to beautiful weather. Mild temperature, low wind and plenty of sun made it just about perfect, for those of you who hunt.
    As for me, I choose to go to the Farm, Home and Garden Show... more about that in a minute!
    John O. Thomas told me Saturday that the birds he'd boosted on Friday evening flew down Saturday morning, gobbled awhile then shut up.
    This was pretty much the same story I heard from everybody. Everybody that is, except for my friend Chris Brady. Chris took a nice mature bird, which scored 60 points. Congratulations, Chris!

  • Turkey: Brady

    Chris Brady of Lebanon took this turkey on Saturday, April 14, in Marion County on opening morning of the 2012 spring turkey season. It weighed 16 1/2 pounds and sported a 10 1/2-inch beard with 1 1/8 spurs. The turkey scored 60 on a scale.

  • Pitchin' and flippin' this weekend

    Well, what was originally forecast to be a miserable weather weekend turned out to be glorious.
    The fact that it was youth weekend for wild turkey, and they were gobbling their heads off, only made it better!
    While some hens have already laid eggs and are setting their nests, doesn't mean the hunting is on a downhill slide. We'll find plenty of gobblers still strutting for our adult season, which starts Saturday!
