  • First turkey: Gaddie

    Brooklyn Gaddie killed her first turkey on April 7. It weighed 21 pounds, had a 10-inch beard and one-inch spurs. She is the daughter of Greg and Jill Gaddie.

  • April Fools fishin'

    Our Mid-Kentucky Bass Anglers April Fool's Day Tournament on Green River was interesting.
    At our 8 a.m. launch, the weather was a little cooler than it's been and it was overcast. As the day progressed it got just plain nasty looking.
    A dark wall cloud moved in bringing a steady wind and some small rollers. It actually got to the point that John and I found an open spot at the state dock, pulled in under a roofed slip, tied off and waited to see what was going to happen.

  • Hinson gets first turkey

    Griffith Hinson, age 12, killed his first turkey. It weighed 26-pounds. He is the son of Scott and Dianna Hinson of Maclenny, Fla. and the grandson of Harold and Dorothy Isaacs of Bradfordsville.

  • Signs, signs, everywhere there's signs

    During my wanderings while checking out prospective turkey hunting spots I've noticed some dogwoods blooming.
    So, what does that have to do with anything? Well, if you believe in such things as "signs" then you may know about dogwoods. Seems bass are supposed to start their spawn when the dogwoods bloom!
    While I don't "disbelieve" in signs, I believe more in tangible indicators. Things like water temperature, moon phase and observation serve me better. Even better is when the "signs" and observable indicators coincide!

  • Warm weather adds to Cabin Fever tourney

    Over the years our Mid-KY Bass Anglers Cabin Fever Bass Tournament has been held in all types of weather. We've fished in the rain and cold. Sometimes it's been freezing rain, and I think once it was snowing!
    But, I know I've never fished in shorts, tee shirt and sandals. At least not till last Sunday. At our tournament, you could've closed your eyes and thought "May" or maybe even "June."
    The 80-degree, by my thermometer, "summer" temperature even had the little pop-up storms associated with the warm season.

  • Fishing is flippin' fun

    If you have a passing interest in competitive fishing you've heard of B.A.S.S. 'Bass Anglers Sportsman Society.' And, given that, you know about the Bassmasters 'Classic' tournament.
    O.K., so you don't know about either B.A.S.S. or the Classic! Well, the short story is that it's a bass fishing tournament where the winner gets half-a-million dollars. That's $500,000 cash plus around that much again in sponsor money, endorsements and 'appearance' fees.

  • Hunting is over; time to fish

    O.K., here it is! Hunting, except for coyotes, is over till April and the wild turkey season.
    What we're looking at now is fishing and getting ready to go fishing. Part of that "getting' ready" is practicing our casting, flippin' and pitchin'.
    And what better way to show how good you are than to engage in some friendly competition!
    To that end I have developed a pitchin'/flippin' game to test our skills. This venue will make its debut April 14 and 15.

  • Fishing season is just around the corner

    Your 2011 Kentucky Hunting/Fishing License expired at midnight on Wednesday, Feb. 29. So, time to renew!
    The Ky. Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is primarily funded by your hunting/fishing license fees, permits you purchase and some money from taxes you pay on hunting and fishing equipment.
    No general tax money goes to the KDFWR. So, in truth, as outdoorsmen and women, we pay our own way.
    I take a certain amount of pride in that!

  • Kentucky native learns about 'gator hunting

    While in South Carolina I got to spend a few hours at the Myrtle Beach Outdoor Expo. There were a bunch of saltwater themed seminars and product but not much in the way of freshwater anything.
    But, it was "the beach," so I shouldn't have expected anything else. My dad was saved when I heard the sound of duck calls. Once I located that booth I learned of a duck-hunting seminar just getting ready to start. As I waited, I read the seminar schedule and "low country alligator hunting" caught my eye.
