  • Freshwater fishing vacation at Myrtle Beach

    Just spent a couple of weeks in one of my favorite places. My sister and brother-in-law went on a cruise, so the wife and I stayed with my dad at Myrtle Beach.
    While it wasn't exactly "at the beach," to me it was even better! Better because their back deck is about sixty feet from the high water mark of the Waccamaw River and most of their front yard is a pond stocked with beam, a.k.a. bluegills.

  • Don't let your hunting license expire

    Your Kentucky hunting and fishing license will expire in a couple of weeks, on Feb. 29, Benny Kessler's birthday.
    I usually get my new one at the Louisville Boat Show but missed it this year. My preference is for the Sportsman's license. With this deal you'll be able to hunt and fish for everything Kentucky has to offer, except elk.
    Add a federal duck stamp for 2012 and you're ready to go for the year. Deer tags, wild turkey permits (spring and fall), waterfowl, doves and fishing are all included. Sorta like one-stop shopping.

  • Hunting with rabbit-tracking dogs

    Last week, Ed Heckle called to ask if I'd like to go rabbit hunting on his "two mules farm." Why "two mules?" I have no idea! To my knowledge, Ed neither currently owns nor has ever owned two mules!
    And, Ed no longer has beagles and neither do I. But, we have a mutual friend who does.
    So, on a pleasant morning, which was so much unlike a "typical" January day, we hooked up with Lonnie Moore and his four bunny busting beagles.

  • Weather has been a bit confusing

    Had to check my calendar last week! Just wanted to make sure I hadn't pulled a Rip Van Winkle! Granted, I like to sleep late sometimes, but going to sleep in early January and waking up in the spring would've been quite a stretch!
    What conditions would cause such confusion? Well, thunderstorms and tornados are sort of expected in the spring, not January!

  • Duck, geese, rabbit and squirrel hunting for good measure

    I'll be kinda glad when this season is over! And I'm not talking about the deer, squirrel, rabbit or waterfowl seasons!
    What I mean is the holiday season. This season when my articles sneak up on me, a.k.a. early deadlines. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and this Monday it's Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
    Anyway, unless you've been cloistered away somewhere you know that "weather wise" it sure doesn't seem like January.

  • A duck boat with some MoJo

    After weeks of construction work the Ark has been completed. No, it's nothing like the one Noah built. What I'm talking about is a 20-foot aluminum duck boat complete with a custom made duck blind built by Terry, Billy and Ryan, with help from Ryan's mom and dad.
    That's Terry Davis, Ryan Mattingly and Billy Thompson, a.k.a. The Kentucky Duckmen. And you thought all we had was Turtleman!
