  • Deer season is a good time to get out of a 'rut'

It's finally here! This Saturday, Nov. 10, thru Nov. 19 we can hunt with any center fire weapon.
Course that's us?Marion County?in Zone 3. You can hunt till the 24th in Zones 1 and 2 so get a "Kentucky Hunting & Trapping Guide" to find those counties in 1 and 2!
Those of you lucky enough to have spent a substantial amount of time in the woods know we're in the middle of a rut right now.

  • KCCR race winner

Jeremy Morris competed in the KCCR racing event held in Lebanon recently. He won the "First Year" category.

  • KCCR racing returns to Marion County

  • Turkey hunting, bass fishing and trick-or-treating

Right now until Nov. 2 and Dec. 1-7, you can hunt turkeys with your shotgun. Now hunting turkeys during this fall season is a different story from the spring season.
In the spring we use locator calls then take advantage of the turkeys desire to reproduce. We make seductive calls to bring the Tom's to us for a shot.
However, in the fall the birds aren't interested in making little turkeys so we have to use a different tactic.

  • Deer-Mattingly

Dylan Mattingly, 5, is the son of Bruce and Jamie Mattingly. He killed this 10-point buck on his dad's farm in Springfield during youth season.

  • Perfect weather marks start of muzzleloader season

I feel sorry for those who missed ... for whatever reason ... this past weekend’s early muzzleloader season!
The weather was about perfect and the deer sign was everywhere. A few days earlier we ... Brian Walls and I ... had found a scrape/rub line that was textbook perfect.
Eight scrapes, with licking branches, were in a line across a ridge and it looked like someone had taken a weedeater to the brush and trees.
It was a classic setup, classic!

  • Deer: Murphy

Addi Murphy of Lebanon bagged her first deer, a 7-point buck, on Oct. 13, during the youth hunt. She is the 10-year-old daughter of Carla and Louis Murphy.

  • Deer: Fields

Taylor Fields, age 12, bagged this 13-point buck on opening day of youth season in Raywick with her Paw Paw, Ricky Fields.

  • Deer: Osbourne

Josh Osbourne shot his first deer in Bradfordsville recently. He is the son of Brad and Michelle Osbourne.

  • Stay alert for 'free' hunting weekends

Well it snuck up on me. Last weekend was the first youth only deer hunt. There's another on Dec. 29-30 which is a "free" weekend. This past weekend was simply "youth only" which might cause some confusion!
In Kentucky resident and non-resident children under the age of 12 are not required to purchase licenses and permits?except elk lottery application.
Both an annual hunting license and an additional permit are required for hunters 12 and older.
Ages 12-15 require a youth hunting license plus a youth deer permit costing $10.
