  • Geese galore and more

    Snow geese by the thousands… maybe millions… awaited us in Arkansas. So many snow geese that a special “conservation order” season has been set in an attempt to control their numbers.
    No license required, just a number from the state of Arkansas. No plug in your gun to allow only a certain number of shells. Matter of fact, you can use a “tube extension” to allow the use of not three, but up to 10 total shells.
    And the biggest kicker: No limit on the number of birds you can take!

  • Surrounded by decoys, looking for birds

    This is one of those “self-imposed” early deadline articles. Self-imposed because come Sunday evening when I usually turn my article in I’ll be fishing my second day of a three-day snow goose hunt in Arkansas.
    We, Terry Davis, Ryan Mattingly, Billy Thompson, three of Terry’s friends and I booked a hunt with Premier Flight Guide Service. We hunt in Arkansas, close to Newport, surrounded by around 1,500 decoys made up of shells, full body and wind socks.

    Saturday was about as exciting as it gets. Granted, it was cold and windy, with a little snow in the mix. But, I was determined not to miss it. It’s been in the planning stages for almost a year and now it was going to happen.
    So I layered up and headed out to an area I’d had my eye on for a while. The signs were all good that my quarry used this area so that only left relying on my stalking abilities to get the job done.
