  • Stay alert for 'free' hunting weekends

    Well it snuck up on me. Last weekend was the first youth only deer hunt. There's another on Dec. 29-30 which is a "free" weekend. This past weekend was simply "youth only" which might cause some confusion!
    In Kentucky resident and non-resident children under the age of 12 are not required to purchase licenses and permits?except elk lottery application.
    Both an annual hunting license and an additional permit are required for hunters 12 and older.
    Ages 12-15 require a youth hunting license plus a youth deer permit costing $10.

  • Coyotes can created problems for pet owners and hunters

    No matter how you feel about them, you sometimes have to deal with them.
    Do you love your small pets?like cats and small dogs? Do you think you should only hunt what you intend to eat? Or maybe you believe in not hunting at all?just let nature take its own course.
    But maybe if something's really dangerous, it can/should be dealt with! This is a dilemma for some?for others it's a small choice.
    What I'm talkin' about are coyotes. Over the last several years they've just about taken over?and lost some fear of man.

  • Kids Day and Ham Days Open Bass tourney are huge success

    It was a very busy and great weekend.
    We started early with the Kids Day at Sportsman's Lake on Saturday. Then even earlier on Sunday we were up for the 7 a.m. blast, or buzz off, at Fagan Branch for the Ham Days Open Bass Tournament.
    Back to Saturday... simply put, it was awesome!
    Our Kids Day started at 9 a.m. but before that a lot of preparation had taken place. This year Jason and Beth Spalding took on the responsibility of organizing our Kids Day. This included a bunch of running to get trophies and door prizes.

  • Saturday is Ham Days Kids Day at Sportsman Lake

    Before I get too far into my article I just want to thank Jason Spalding. Ya see, we weren't going to have the Ham Days Kids Day this year due to lack of funding.
    But Jason contacted Independent Stave and because of a very generous sponsorship from them, and a check from our Lebanon/Marion County Kiwanis Club, Saturday is back on.
    So when ya come out Saturday, find Jason and thank him for all he did!
    Here's the plan: Saturday, Sept. 22, we'll meet at our Sportsman Lake. We'll start at 9 a.m. and go until 2 p.m., or there about!

  • Perfect weather kicks off hunting seasons

    The last couple of weekends have been the perfect kickoff to hunting seasons. This was courtesy of the first dove season, which opened Sept. 1. Couldn't write about it before due to my last early deadline!
    I attended the Peterson shoot on opening day. Course there were numerous shoots, mostly by invitation only! But, the invitation process was a pretty loose deal. You hear about a shoot from somebody who was "invited" maybe twice removed. Then they'd say "come on out," so thus you were invited!
