  • Epps is AP girls player of the...

Marion County High School point guard Makayla Epps recently was voted as the 2013 Associated Press Kentucky girls basketball player of the year.
She said that she set team goals as her main focus this past season, and all the individual goals added to it.
Joining Epps on the first team is teammate Kyvin Goodin-Rogers, both of whom are Kentucky signees.
Other members of the first team include Rebecca Greenwell, China Dow, and Larryn Brooks.   The girls’ coach of the year honor went to Nicole Levandusky from Notre Dame.

  • Tennis opens regional tournament

Three Lady Knights and four Knights advanced past the first round in the regional tennis tournament that started Friday at Freeman Lake Courts in Elizabethtown. The second round matches were scheduled to begin Monday, and second round results will be in next week’s issue.
In girls singles, Alyssa Farmer advanced by defeating Bardstown’s Selena Spencer, 6-1, 6-3.  Marion County’s Allie Evans fell to Bethlehem’s Abby Moore, 6-4, 6-3.

  • Knights take two of four

Last week, Marion County hosted John Hardin on April 29 and Washington County on May 1, before going on the road to play Garrard County Friday and Bryan Station Saturday.  The Knights (16-10) won two of the four contests.

Despite having fewer miscues than host Bryan Station, the Knights gave up 14 hits and five walks, and lost, 14-4, Saturday.
“We had a beautiful day to play in Lexington but we were simply flat and lacked energy,” Marion County Coach Chad Spalding said.

  • Lady Knights pick up nine-run...

The Marion County Lady Knights softball team won the only game it played last week, defeating Casey County on April 30. The Lady Knights were scheduled to play Bethlehem on April 29, but that game was cancelled due to wet field conditions.
With the win, Marion County’s record stands at 17-7.

  • Mix it up

Normally, I think of one topic to write about and have a normal title for my column.  However, this week, I didn’t want to just write about the Kentucky Derby, so I thought of two other ideas to go along with the Run for the Roses.
First, since I already have the derby on my mind, I will begin there. This past Saturday was not the best of conditions for the event, as it rained pretty much the entire day. Since Karli and I couldn’t go outside and play, I tried to watch as much of the 139th Kentucky Derby coverage as possible.

  • Turkeys stay safe, away from...

O.K. Score: Turkeys = several, me = zero. Oh, I saw birds, plenty of birds. But, they were either very young (small Jakes) or they hung up on me.
Course the Jakes got to looking better the closer to season’s end it got. They also got wiser and the last week of the season even they started to hang up!

He began his coaching career as an assistant football coach with Sam B. Thomas at St. Charles Middle School. He also helped Randall Talley with basketball.  Coaches Dudley Hilton and Mike Holcomb worked with Peterson in his first high school coaching job at Breathitt County.
