With a squad only boasting four seniors, Marion County High School baseball Head Coach Chad Spalding and crew are feeling good about being 4-2 after two weeks of play.

"I'll take four wins with the weather conditions we've been having. If things went a little bit differently we're looking at possibly being 6-0," Spalding said.

The Knights led late in both losses, with big innings upending them each time.

A big inning helped push the Knights past a solid Washington County squad in a 3-2 win, which is something Spalding teaches his players.

Three wins last week helped end a three game opening skid and point the Marion County High School softball team in the right direction under new coach Trent Milby.

"We're getting better. We won four of five this week," Milby said. "We're starting to hit the ball better. We lost some close games but then started hitting the ball better and playing good defense and that equals wins. We're working on changing their mentality to win every game instead of playing just for fun."

Though spring practice went nearly perfect for nine days, the tenth day was a spoiler for Marion County High School football Head Coach Jeff Robbins and the Knights.

Rain and dormant grass sent Robbins and company seeking shelter in the fitness center Friday instead of ending spring practice with the annual intra squad Maroon - White scrimmage.

"If it was the fall and we needed to go out, we go out. The safety of the kids and concern for kids is the number one factor," Robbins said.

A three run outburst in the fifth inning would provide enough cushion for the Marion County High School baseball team to outlast Bethlehem High School 7-5 at Hourigan Field on Monday of last week.

"We played good at times and awful at times," Head Coach Chad Spalding said.

Spalding said he and the coaching staff expected inconsistent play to open the season.

"We had some timely hits that really helped us out," Spalding said.
