  • Marion County superintendent...

For his decision to cancel a scheduled "donkey basketball" game out of concern for the welfare of the animals and the safety of human participants, Marion County Superintendent Roger Marcum will receive PETA's Compassionate Educator Award.

Marcum canceled the game - which was scheduled for Feb. 21 - following public outcry over cruelty to the donkeys as well as the risk of injury to human participants who play basketball while mounted on the animals' backs.

  • District tournament play begins

The Knights and Lady Knights begin the real season this week as tournament play tips off in Adair County.

The Knights (8-21) face off with top seed Adair County (22-6). Adair owned the season series winning both games (58-41, 57-39).

Adair went undefeated in regular season district play, going 6-0. They are 20-3 in district play since 2006-07 season.

  • Q & A with former athlete...

Q & A with Marion County High School athletes is a new series that will appear periodically. If you know an athlete that would be a good candidate for Q & A, email Jesse Osbourne at jesseophoto@gmail.com.

This week's athlete is Trey Chelf, a 2005 graduate that is currently swimming for Western Kentucky University.

  • Regular season comes to a close...

The Lady Knights round out the regular season with games against Bardstown (5-13) and LaRue County (13-10) before facing off with Taylor County (13-11) in the first round of the district tournament on Tuesday of next week.

Bardstown is struggling after losing sophomore stand out Daziah Kimberland to injury before the season. The Lady Tigers were on a nine game skid as of press time, including losses to mutual opponents North Hardin (85-30), Nelson County (69-32, 64-29), Washington County (36-33), Green County (56-29) and Danville (41-36).

  • Donkey basketball cancelled

A fund raiser for the Lady Knights girls basketball team was cancelled last week due to public concern for those involved.

A donkey basketball contest was scheduled for Feb. 21, at the Roby Dome, with proceeds going towards the Lady Knights basketball team. An explanation of what donkey basketball is can be found in last week's Enterprise.

However, some community members reasoned that the sport is a risk to humans and inhumane for the donkeys.

  • Lady Knights win four out of...

The Marion County Lady Knights tested their fortitude against a schedule that would make most teams squirm last week and came away with quality wins.

Playing four games in five days, the Lady Knights toppled tough region teams Hart County (14-9) and North Hardin (21-4) on the road, held off a tough Green County (21-6) team at home, dusted border rival Washington County (5-16) and almost knocked off Mercy (16-6), a top team in the state.

  • Knights win two, lose three

The Marion County Knights boys basketball team finished one of its best weeks of the season, winning two out of five games against Fifth Region opponents.

While the Knights looked great at times, they also lost handily to Elizabethtown (9-14) and Nelson County (13-9).

Head Coach Tim Peterson believes the Knights (8-19) need to tune up their shot before tournament time.

"Our outside shooting hasn't been up to par this week. We're going to work on that," he said. "We're going to work on getting our feet ready and being prepared to shoot."

  • Junior varsity, freshmen Knights...

The Marion County High School junior varsity and freshment boys’ basketball team recently wrapped up its seasons.

    Marion     4  0  7  3 - 14

  • Knights end streak, pick up two...

Though a burden to most, the ice storm that ravaged the state last week seemingly helped the Marion County High School boys basketball team.

An eight game losing streak came to a halt and the Knights picked up their first win of 2009 last week on the road.

The Knights ended a losing streak that dated back to late December on Thursday night against Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL) (11-11). The Knights (6-16) dropped a close game to Taylor County (15-6) the next night but picked up another win on Saturday against Hancock County (7-15).

  • Aqua Knights future looks bright

Between them, record breakers Annaliece Mattingly and Tommy Carrico have three years left to swim. Right now, they're just getting started.

Marion County High School sophomore Mattingly and junior Carrico recently smashed records in their strongest events - the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle, respectively.
