  • The path to modesty

This story is the first in a two-part series about local MMA fighter Shawn Woodyard. Check back next week for the second part. Warning: This story includes some adult language.

Growing up as an outsider, Shawn Woodyard needed to find his way to fit in. Sometimes it takes more than one try to get it right.

  • The ABC's of MMA

Mixed martial arts has grown in Kentucky and Marion County but what is it, exactly?

Local mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Shawn Woodyard recently sat down to explain the basics of the sport.

MMA consists of different fighting styles such as boxing, karate, ju jitsu and kick boxing.

In the early 1990's, tournaments begin springing up to feature these different styles of fighting.

  • Something to prove

Growing up as a small guy, Jeremy Yates is out to defeat a stereotype.

He's up against the belief that small guys can't fight and so far he's off to a good start. He's willing to go through broken noses and anything else to win.

Yates is 1-0 as a mixed martial arts fighter (MMA) and his second match is fast approaching.

"I always had bigger guys try to run over me and I'd always tried to hold my own but a lot of times fell short," Yates said.

  • Knights lose heartbreaker to...

Mistakes piled up for the Knights on Friday, so much that it cost them a chance to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

Carlos Litsey batted down a Fairdale pass to the end zone on fourth and 22 with 2:19 to go, seemingly ensuring a 17-14 victory for the Knights.

The Knights just needed to run the clock against Fairdale who had previously used all of their time outs.

A mishandled hand off led to a Buster Hazelwood fumble with 1:37 to go in the game. Fairdale would recover on the Marion County 36-yard line.

  • A long night for the Knights

Green County handed Marion County its worst loss of the season Friday night in Greensburg as the Dragons beat Marion County, 42-21.

The 21-point margin ties for the worst loss of the season, the first coming at the hands of undefeated John Hardin.
