The Marion County Knights begin their quest for a state championship on Friday night at John J. Boswell Field.

The Knights (8-2) host Breckinridge County (3-7) on Friday. Breckinridge returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2000, when they went 11-2. After that season, Breckinridge struggled to win at all. They went a combined 10-67 from 2001 to 2008.

Second year Head Coach Scott Mooney has helped swing the fortunes of Breckinridge, using a healthy dose of the option to break the playoff drought.

For the first time since 2007, the Marion County High School football team has escaped district play unbeaten.

The 2009 Knights completed the sweep Friday night at John J. Boswell Field against a North Bullitt team (2-7) that lost a significant amount of seniors from last season, including their Mr. Everything, Dalton Cissell.

The Knights (7-2) came out flat and looked sluggish against North Bullitt, despite leading 19-0 at halftime.

  • Lady Knights fall in region

The Knights (23-17) and the Hawks split the season series 1-1 with both teams winning on their own floor.

  • Knights gear up for season...

Friday night’s arrival of the Green County Dragons (7-2) will make for good football, according to Marion County High School football Head Coach Jeff Robbins.

“This ought to be a knock down drag out high school football game,” Robbins said.

Both teams are district champs, both have identical win-loss records and the teams have a history starting to build.

  • Knights survive last second fling

At times Saturday it looked like Bullitt East High School (2-5), despite losing double-digit seniors to graduation, still had the Knights' number.

The game went down to the last second as a pass from senior Matt Bowles went over two Marion County backs and through the hands of junior Jordan Smith in the end zone as time expired.

Marion County High School (5-2) slipped by despite a nasty start and trailing in the fourth quarter.

The Knights racked up 60 yards of penalties in the first half and both sidelines were crying foul at the officiating.
