Alex Spalding, the top seed in the tournament, took the region singles championship by defeating the second seed, Tyler Edlin of John Hardin, 7-5, 6-4.

In a playoff match, Marion County won the team championship.

  • It’s just a game, man

“This will not stand, you know, this aggression will not stand, man.”

That’s a quote from one of my favorite movies, “The Big Lebowski.”

In it, he was quoting a speech given by former president George H.W. Bush.

I bring up the quote because last week, Stephen Lega brought to my attention a story run on Whitley County’s The News Journal website.

  • Phillies favorite

On May 2, Joan Wood, the librarian at Lebanon Elementary School, was honored in Philadelphia as a Phillies Favorite Teacher during the 14th annual Teacher Appreciation Night. The honor was presented to her on the field of Citizens Bank Park by Phillies center fielder Ben Revere.

Wood, along with Sharon Calhoun of Richmond, was picked by Revere as one of his favorite teachers. They are two teachers from his past.

Wood said the experience was amazing.

  • Lady Knights top Adair, LaRue...

The Marion County Lady Knights fought tooth and nail to win two of their four games last week.

After falling in their first game against the Central Hardin Lady Bruins, the Lady Knights (15-8) took two victories against the Adair County Lady Indians and The LaRue County Lady Hawks. They would seal their week of play with a loss against the Green County Dragons.

  • Knights win one of three

The Marion County Knights lost to the visiting Danville Admirals on May 7. Going into the game, Knights Coach Patrick Campbell had positive expectations.

“That’s the crazy thing about baseball,” Campbell said. “You never know what could happen on any given day.”

It would be the second time the teams faced off for the season. In their April 18 game, the Knights lost 11-0 in five innings.

  • Rain washes out one tourney;...

Well guys, we got through Mother’s Day all right, except for those of you who forgot!

For those of you who fell for a wife’s biggest lie i.e. “Don’t bother getting me anything this year,” I hope you learned your lesson!

As for me, I took the wife out Saturday, got her a charm for her Pandora bracelet then took her to lunch on Sunday.

  • Goodin-Rodgers cleared to play

After a missed season and a long wait, former Marion County Lady Knight Kyvin Goodin-Rodgers has been cleared to return to play for the University of Kentucky.

Goodin-Rodgers tweeted on April 30 that she felt good to be cleared to return to the court.

In October, Goodin-Rodgers was diagnosed as having a pulmonary embolism, which forced her to sit out the 2013 season.
