One woman has died and two other people were transported to the hospital following an automobile accident at 5:30 p.m. Saturday on Springfield Highway, approximately 4.4 miles north of Lebanon.

Virginia Simpson of Bardstown was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision. Richard T. Bishop and Carol A. Mink of Cloverdale, Ind., were taken to Spring View Hospital. Bishop was listed in stable condition and transfered to University Hospital in Louisville, and Mink was treated and released.

Bishop was driving north on Springfield Highway in a silver Chevy Impala LT, when he moved into the southbound lane to pass another vehicle. According to Marion County Sheriff Jimmy Clements, Bishop said at first he did not see the Simpson's vehicle, a blue Chevy station wagon, which was driving southbound on Springfield Highway.

"[Bishop] accelerated to get out of her lane and they collided," Clements said.

Bishop also collided with a 2005 Toyota operated by Masotoshi Miyama of Springfield, but Miyama was not injured.

The accident caused the road to be closed until shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday evening.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office investigated the accident. Marion County EMS, Marion County Rescue, Marion County Emergency Management and the Lebanon Police assisted.
