Can't have it all

-A A +A
By Jessica Veatch

I have heard a coworker sing the song, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" to his daughter, and that phrase rings true in many aspects of our lives. When it comes to the sports world, we get plenty of games to watch, but they don't always go our way.

Overall, in this past week of sports, I have got what I wanted for the most part. Both the Marion County Knights and Lady Knights basketball teams started out their seasons going 2-0. The Knights defeated Mercer County in their season opener at the Roby Dome, and won against Nelson County Friday night on the road.  They did this without one of their senior leaders.

The Lady Knights also won their season opener at home, defeating Casey County by 20 points, and then went on to beat Nelson County on the road Friday night. I am hoping the season will continue this way, with both teams racking up the Ws and getting better each game. If so, I think both teams will be very fun to watch come tournament time.

And of course, I can't forget the University of Kentucky game vs. North Carolina Saturday. I had mixed emotions going into the game, not knowing if Kentucky's youth could outdo North Carolina's experience. It was a very exciting game, and I was glued to the television from the start. I even convinced my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Karli to watch the game with me, and had her chanting "Go Cats" throughout the game. I did scare her at one point when I let out a huge yell when one of the UK players threw down a monstrous dunk.

At the end of the game, I was fearful when Teague missed the free throw with UK only up by one point, and North Carolina had the last shot, which would win the game. Thank goodness that Davis is a blocking beast and North Carolina didn't foul at the end to prolong the game. This contest could easily have went either way, and showed why both of these teams were ranked in the top five. There were so many ties and lead changes in the game, and those are the fun ones to watch.  But in the end, I got what I wanted, a UK win to take their record to 7-0 and to keep them No. 1 in the rankings.

Although I am getting what I want in the basketball world right now, my favorite NFL football team hasn't won a game this season. The Indianapolis Colts are currently 0-12 and will not make the playoffs this season. This team has been very successful for many seasons, with Peyton Manning as their starting quarterback. With him still sidelined due to his neck injury, this season's games have been hard to watch, well the ones of them that have been on television.

So there you have it, things that have went my way this past week in sports and then the football season that hasn't went my way this year. I guess that's why they say you can't have it all.
