The Marion County Knights golf team took a win against the Bardstown Tigers on Sept. 4, but fell to the LaRue County Hawks back on Aug. 30.

The Knights defeated Bardstown by a single point, 168-169.

“I was proud of my team,” Marion County Head Coach Joey Reed said. “This is our fourth match of the year and we have improved our overall team score in each match breaking 170 for the first time this year.”

Bryce Spalding shot a team-leading 36 in the match.

“Bryce played really well,” Reed said. “Shooting +1 shows me mentally he is getting better.”

Travis Wiser shot a 42 in the match.

“I knew he would be a great leadership ability to add to the team but I didn’t know he would improve this quickly,” Reed said. “Hopefully, he can keep this going into region. He has worked very hard on his short game and cleaning up some course management mistakes.”

Dalton Sallee and Ashton Lanham both shot a 45. Chris Craig shot a 46. Lucas Ross posted a 47. Ava Spalding shot a 54 and Otoka Ishii shot a 63.

Marion County could not pull out the win against the Hawks, losing 172-166.

“Overall, we didn’t play to our potential but we battled,” Reed said.

Bryce Spalding shot a 40 in the match.

“Bryce got off to a rough start but I was proud of how he battled his way back to finish strong,” he said.

Lanham shot a 41, Sallee shot a 42, Wiser shot a 49, Ava Spalding shot a 52 and Craig shot a 53.

“Overall, a loss isn’t fun but we’re getting there,” Reed said. “We knew this year was going to be a learning curve and an uphill battle from what we lost last year, but I know what I got as a team and I have a team full of guys who continue to work and want to be better. That’s what you want as a coach. I see a lot of positives. I like where we are heading as a team.”
