No school today in Marion County

-A A +A

Marion County Library will open at 11 a.m.

Marion County Schools are closed today, Friday, Feb. 1.

Marion County Superintendent Dr. Chuck Hamilton issued the following statement explaining the decision to close schools today:

“Often we get calls questioning the decision to close schools or delay the start of school. These decisions are not made lightly and have to be decided no later than 5 a.m., in order to assure all 3,000 families and 480 employees are aware in time to make alternate arrangements. What may be safe conditions for an individual adult going to work are not always so for 72 passenger school buses or teenage drivers. We do not make decisions on predictions. We work with the reality as we know it in the early hours of the morning. At times these conditions may improve rapidly from 5 a.m., to our normal start time, but again that would be making a prediction, from what we know as reality by 5 a.m., and we won’t take that risk. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we look after the safety of our children and staff.

Notifications of closing are done by an automated call out system, email to staff, local and regional media outlets, twitter (@chuckhamilton3), Facebook (Marion County Public Schools) and web page (www.marion.kyschools.us).”

The Marion County Public Library is opening today at 11 a.m. The library has posted the following statement on its Facebook page:

"Marion County Public Library will open today on a delayed schedule at 11 a.m. in order to allow it's parking area and walk ways to melt off. Driving and walking conditions are currently slick. Please be aware that our upper parking area is shadowed by the building and can have hidden slick spots. Please be very careful when attempting to visit us. Above all else please stay safe and know that our policy is to always delete any overdue fines accrued during poor weather conditions. Thank you for your understanding!"
