  • After the heat-wave in mid-May flea beetles seemed to have settled on just about everything I had growing in the garden. Bok choy, potatoes, tomatoes and turnips looked as if they were shot full of tiny holes! I pick and squish and drown but that doesn’t really work with the tiny flea beetle. As you know I do not use chemical pesticides in the vegetable garden. I will reach for a bio-insecticide if I must, however. Bio-insecticides include plant oils and compounds, naturally occurring bacteria, viruses and protozoa. We are essentially using nature to eat nature.

  • Okay, she’s lost her mind. She’s going to have recipes for BURGERS in her column!

    Well, yes I am. We’ve got a holiday weekend coming up. Lots of people will be grilling burgers, and I just got a new cookbook. It’s called “The Burger,” and features 100 recipes for burgers, along with recipes for homemade ketchup and homemade mustard. Now, I know most cooks can make a hamburger, but some of these are quite different.

  • On Saturday, May 26, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. will ordain David Joseph Farrell to the diocesan priesthood for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville.  The ordination will take place at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 South Fifth Street, Louisville.

    I carefully dropped the seeds into the ground, spacing them 12-18 inches apart, per directions.
    “Now, Dr. David, I’m not meticulous like you are. I know you want them in 1 inch of dirt. But, I’m not going to get down on the ground and cover the dirt over them with my hands. I just use my foot for that, like this,” Martha, said, demonstrating how she gently covered the seeds in the soil.
    “That’s fine, Momma Martha, whatever you say.”

  • Celebrate Recovery and Celebration Place helps people find healing in Jesus from life's hurts, habits, and hang-ups. We're committed to see people set free and experience hope and transformation. It starts at 6 p.m. every Tuesday night at the Lebanon United Methodist Church. The schedule includes: 6 p.m. meal; 6:30 p.m. - large group gathering; 6:30 p.m. - Celebration Place (CR for Kids); 7:30 p.m. - open share groups; and 8:30 p.m. - Solid Rock Café (desserts).

  • Monday, May 21: chicken parmesan, baked potato, broccoli casserole, margarine, sour cream, and pineapple delight.
    Tuesday, May 22: barbecue pork, au gratin potatoes, cucumber salad, oatmeal raisin cookie, and wheat bun.
    Wednesday, May 23: beef stew, brown rice, coleslaw, wheat roll, and pineapple delight.
    Thursday, May 24: senior celebration – all centers are closed.
    Friday, May 25: breaded Pollock, pinto beans, coleslaw, vanilla pudding, and cornbread and margarine.
    All meals are served with skim milk.
