• Artist-in-residency at LES

    Blacksmith and teaching artist Bob Montgomery began an art residency at Lebanon Elementary School last week.
    Montgomery began his blacksmithing career as a farrier. While working as a farrier, he continued to develop decorative ironwork for wholesale markets such as candleholders, wreaths and fireplace tools. In the early 1990s he began to make sculptural pieces, dragons and large fabricated animals. Now he creates and sells sculptures from his studio outside of Berea.

  • Marion County partners prepare to showcase manufacturing careers

    October is Manufacturing Month in Kentucky. It is, in part, a time to highlight the career opportunities this vital industry sector offers throughout the state. Marion County is no exception, and a special event introduced Marion County High School students to not only the manufacturing industry, but also to the manufacturing employers in their home county.
    Manufacturing Day was held Oct. 16 at Marion County High School. Representatives from 11 local companies were on hand to talk to students about:

  • Packing in an education

    Nearly seven years ago, 58 percent of Marion County voters voted against the “recallable nickel” during the 2008 General Election. Today, the Marion County Public Schools have more than $50 million in unmet capital needs, and schools that are busting at the seams.

  • Request to rescind resignation is denied

    Former principal of West Marion Elementary School, Paula Walston, who resigned from her position on Sept. 25, asked the Marion County Board of Education to rescind her resignation during a special-called meeting Monday, Oct. 12.
    The board unanimously declined her request.

  • Inauguration-week events begin Oct. 17 at SCC

    With the presidential inauguration of Dr. Cindy Gnadinger scheduled for Oct. 23, a week of activities will lead up to the inauguration ceremony. The public is invited to join the St. Catharine College community as it gets ready for inauguration.
    On Oct. 17, teams of volunteers from St. Catharine College will partner for a day of service around Washington County. To volunteer or for more information, email inauguration@sccky.edu.

  • Blessing of campus of educational farm at SCC is Oct. 19

    The Berry Farming Program at St. Catharine College invites the community and college to a ceremony to bless and christen its new educational farm on Monday, Oct. 19, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Berry Farming Program offers undergraduate degrees in sustainable agriculture and local food systems development. The curriculum is grounded in the lifework of Kentucky farmer and writer Wendell Berry. The campus farm will serve as a hands-on training and research facility for SCC students and the community.
