  • The Playoffs

Jim Mora once said during a postgame press conference, “What’s that? Ah — Playoffs? Don’t talk about — playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?”
That quote has become one of the most famous quotes. Yes, Jim Mora, I’m going to talk about the playoffs. Specifically, I’m talking about the NBA playoffs, which have reached the Conference Finals.
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics are matched up in the Eastern Conference Finals while the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors battle in the Western Conference Finals.

  • Softball: Memorial ceremony was...

Prior to the home softball game on May 7, Marion County High School held a memorial ceremony in honor of Olivia Ford who tragically lost her life earlier this year. The event included students speaking about their memories of Olivia, the unveiling of a commemorative painting, music by the Beatles (her favorite band), and a balloon release.
For MCHS Principal Thad Elmore, the emotional event was more than just a chance to remember a former student -- it also illustrated the strength and compassion of MCHS students.

  • Riley Wayland to play soccer for...

Riley Wayland signed a letter of intent to play girls soccer at Brescia University on May 10. Pictured, front row, from left, are Wayland’s father, Brad Wayland, Wayland and Wayland’s mother, Shelly Wayland; back row from left, are Marion County Athletic Director Michael Holt, Brescia Head Coach David Ralph and Lady Knights Head Coach Daniel Johnson.

  • SOFTBALL: Lady Knights look to...

Over three years have passed since Adair County defeated Marion County.
That win came all the way back on April 23, 2015 in a 10-6 win.
Since then, Marion County has won eight straight against Adair County. Wins have been difficult enough but getting a run against the Lady Knights has proven to be even more difficult as Adair County (6-18, 0-6) last scored against the Lady Knights in a 5-1 loss on April 26, 2016.

  • TENNIS: Spalding going to state...

Bryce Spalding might not have won the region but Spalding’s season survives for at least one more match.
Spalding advanced to the semifinals of the regional meet at Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown last week and, in doing so, qualified for the state meet in boys singles.
The state begins tomorrow at Shillito Park in Lexington. Play runs through Saturday.

  • TRACK AND FIELD: Knights send 4...

The Marion County High School track and field team is sending four team members to the state meet.
Alexis Hoppes, Nate Hoppes, Stephen Salgado and Jayla Cowherd are all going on state after their respective performances at the regional meet in Bardstown on May 8.
“All season long we have been strong in the field events and it was no different at region. All of our state qualifiers were in the field,” Head Coach Daniel Johnson said.

  • Vaught’s Views: John Pelphrey...

    By Larry Vaught

John Pelphrey knows he’s led a blessed life – but he does have one major regret that likely will never go away.
He was Mr. Basketball in 1987 after leading Paintsville to the state tournament. He signed with Kentucky and coach Eddie Sutton before the program was hit by NCAA probation. He became one of “The Unforgettables” for new coach Rick Pitino. He played in 114 games at UK and averaged 11.5 points per game. He was part of that epic overtime loss to Duke in the 1992 NCAA Tournament East Region final.

  • BASEBALL: Knights look to avenge...

After a dominating 10-3 win over Green County on April 30, the Knights took two heartbreaking losses to LaRue County, 3-2, and North Hardin 4-2. Marion County’s comeback bid against Meade County on Friday also came up short in an 8-6 loss.
Getting hits hasn’t been the problem this season; on the season, Marion County has 166 hits, or 7.2 per game. Thomas’ 30 hits lead the team while Travis Wiser’s 28 are second. Luke Abell has 20 hits.
